Legal assistance and consultancy
Cewla provides the legal consultation and assistance service for women through the cases section which includes a number of skilled lawyers working in Cewla.
This service is offered for women who had to go to court due to the unacceptable violence they faced, mostly caused by their husbands.
Women who frequent to the center to benefit from this service are mostly poor. On the other hand, a small percentage of women who seek to profit from this center have no difficulties hiring a lawyer. Still they prefer, that Cewla adopts their case knowing that it will do that out of true believe and faith to support her and not seeking any financial benefit.
This service is also available per phone (hot line service) so that everyone can benefit from it.
The legal cases section is one of the basic units of Cewla. The idea of establishing Cewla was mainly offering legal assistance for women by consultation and adopting their cases in front of court, but Cewla also tries to find amicable ways to solve the problem.
With time Cewla also discovered that there are men who need legal consultation and therefore decided to specify some of the services of the legal cases section for men.
The section's activity:
1) Offer legal consultation to women in any field especially in the personal status field.
2) Adopt any case in front of court if the woman wishes to do so.
The target groups:
1-Women:
Women are the primary beneficiaries of the services provided by the Legal Cases Unit. CEWLA is located in Boulaq, a poor district of Cairo. Women from Boulaq come to the Center to receive legal help because they cannot afford to hire lawyers. In addition, some women who are better off prefer to come to CEWLA instead of hiring a private lawyer because they trust the Center to carry out its mission of assisting and supporting women. CEWLA does not seek financial gain; therefore it defends women's cases with true belief and conviction.
Note: Adopting a woman's case in front of the court is a service only available to women in Cairo.
2- Men:
Over time CEWLA discovered that there are a lot of men who are in need of legal assistance but cannot afford a lawyer. Because assisting a man could also help a woman indirectly (by helping her husband, for example) CEWLA also offers services for men.
