Legal services and obtaining of official papers
Through the Legal Services Unit, CEWLA helps women to obtain personal documents such as identification cards, pension and insurance papers, etc. Although this service is mostly provided to women, 20% of the services are reserved for men.
The unit provides both financial and technical support. CEWLA will cover the charge for obtaining the document partially or in full, depending on the case. In addition, CEWLA staff will accompany the person to the office where the papers are issued and help her or him to go through the process of obtaining them.
The Legal Services Unit works primarily in Cairo, but its services are also provided in other governorates if the person seeking them is a resident of Cairo. In these cases the form of support is only financial. Moreover, the activities of the Legal Services Unit have been expanded. It does not only assist in obtaining official papers and documents, but it also educates women in literacy classes about the importance of these papers and how to obtain them. In addition, the women there also receive information on other topics such as health, personal hygiene, nutrition, negotiating and many other topics that raise their awareness.
The goals of the Legal Services Unit:
1) Help women (especially those from Boulaq) either technically or financially, to obtain their personal documents and papers such as ID cards and birth certificates. These personal documents will enable women to get the literacy certificate, pensions, loans and more generally to access their legal rights.
2) Enable women to benefit from the services the state provides such as loans, pensions, insurance papers and job opportunities .
3) Spread legal and health awareness among illiterate women and educate women on development-related topics .
4) Raise awareness of the importance of personal documents and official papers, whether in other NGOs or among women in literacy classes (in Boulaq and other places where it is necessary).
5) Cooperate with other centers and NGOs and help women to benefit from the various services that these organizations provide.
6) Create collaboration between CEWLA and the governmental authorities, especially those in charge of the civil archives. In addition, exchange experiences in order to solve problems more efficiently .
