Literacy classes

The literacy classes, provided by the Literacy Unit, are some of the most important activities undertaken by CEWLA in Boulaq from its founding in 1995 until today.

Goals of the literacy classes and the continuing education:

1) Eliminating illiteracy, especially among women and girls .
2) Providing higher levels of education for those who wish to continue their studies .
3) Encouraging women to participate in solving society's problems through organizing workshops and roundtable discussions.

The unit's activities:

The first stage: literacy classes

- There is a month-long program prior to formal studying, designed to create a friendly and familiar atmosphere among the attendees and to emphasize educational basics such as numbers and the alphabet.
- The main study program consists of daily literacy classes over six months. Throughout this program workshops are held to raise legal, environmental, health and political awareness. The program is combined with video presentations.
- Educational and entertainment excursions are organized for the attendees.
